The first United Way in India was established in
Baroda, Gujarat in July 1986 and formally affiliated with United Way International that same year.
United Way of Baroda (UWB) was created as a reliable system for mobilizing community resources and utilizing them for health and human-care services. UWB’s first fundraising event was held in December 1985. In fiscal year 2005-2006, UWB worked with over 150 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and provided financial support to 83 of those organizations and the total amount invested in the community was 39,86,512 (approx. USD 891,064).
The second United Way in the country was established in Mumbai in July 2002.
United Way Mumbai seeks to leverage corporate, employee and leadership talent for community development. United Way Mumbai currently partners with 28 agencies.
United Way Mumbai has identified four areas of attention and investment: Children and Education, Youth and Vocational Training, Women Empowerment, Governance and Civic Issues.
United Way Mumbai has also been instrumental in the long-term disaster relief following the 2004 Tsunami. Top projects include the provision of collectively-owned fishing boats for restoration of livelihoods and the construction of permanent houses for 273 families with advanced foundations, sanitation and other facilities than the homes destroyed by the tsunami. In addition, United Way Mumbai collaborated with Samsung, United Way International and the Hope Foundation to construct the Samsung School of Hope in Chinnagudi village.
United Way Mumbai raises funds through a number of strategies including payroll deduction through workplace campaigns and special events, including an annual marathon. For the fiscal year of 2005-2006 United Way Mumbai’s total income was Rs. 52,537,899 (approx. USD 1.2 million).
The Governing Board of
United Way Mumbai has senior representation from organizations like Hunt Partners India, AIG, E&Y, JM Morgan Stanley, A.T. Kearney, Citigroup, Principal Asset Management Co., Mahindra & Mahindra, Jasubhai Group, JP Morgan Chase Bank and AZB & Partners, amongst others.
The United Way of
Bengaluru was established in July 2008 and the
United Way of Hubli-Dharwad in North Karnataka will be established by November 2008.
Volunteer Board members of
United Way of Bengaluru include senior executives of iGATE, Deshpande Foundation, Agilent Technologies, Akshara Foundation, Deutsche Bank, GE Foundation, HP Global e-Business Operations, Manipal Foundation, Qwest Telecom Software Services, Silicon Valley Bank India Advisors and Charu Sharma, Sports Commentator and TV personality.
Additionally,
United Way of Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune are in early stage of development.
