Designing and administrating innovative programs in joint partnership with credible and genuine Non-profit Organizations, Individuals and other Associations/ Organizations that would be prepared to implement such programs to serve or further the stated objectives.

Mobilizing the caring power of communities by encouraging significant and meaningful volunteering.

Nurturing and supporting genuine, effective and innovative development start-ups and small grass root community based organizations. The intention is to encourage and support organizations that tackle problems in new ways, demonstrating innovation and creativity in their program strategies and approaches. Thus contributing to the growth of the civil society, encouraging the growth of home grown philanthropy and supporting social entrepreneurship.

Leveraging additional funding: In special cases United Way of Delhi works with other agencies to increase the amount of funding available to programs and partner organizations. Thus acting like a promoter for large scale projects. Additionally grantee partners are also helped in raising their capacity to raise funding from their local network.

Documentation and Case study compilation: special focus would be on documentation of process and successful case studies by partner organizations. Additional grants would be provided for the same if required.

For the purpose of promoting innovative & creative concepts to tackle traditional problems provisions for providing seed funding grants to individuals and groups are considered under the fellowship program.

Specific designated funds could be created where the intent would be to target a very specific geographical area or a current issue.

Project Title:-  Mobile Science Lab
Key Focus:-  Education

Background

Mr Malcolm Forbes – multimillionaire and publisher of ‘Forbes’ magazine once rightly opined in a public forum - “Education’s responsibility is to replace an empty mind with an open one”.

UWD Mr Malcolm’s opinion becomes ever more noteworthy when one refers to the education of future’s largest pool of human resource. As per the forecasts by leading demographists, India’s population will have the largest pool of young workforce in the world by 2025. Science being an inseparable part of our daily lives, its smooth integration with general education becomes imperative if education has to fulfill the responsibility of replacing an empty mind with an open one. Everything we do and deal with in life is science from cooking, playing ball, growing a garden and understanding how technologies work to watching a rain storm. Science is everywhere, and understanding how it’s a part of our daily lives can give students a great foundation for success in life.

UWD The perception that science education is relevant only for scientists, doctors and technicians does not hold ground in today’s high-tech world. A solid base of science education is essential for students of all backgrounds, talents, interests, and abilities. All children need the knowledge and skills that make up what we call "Science Literacy" – the ability to make sense of the world around them. By helping students learn how to observe, collect evidence, and draw conclusions, science helps them sharpen their thinking about the ideas and events they encounter in everyday life.

The Project

UWD United Way of Delhi (UWD) committed for advancing ‘Common Good’ for local community has joined hands with Agastya International Foundation to promote ‘Science-Literacy’ in government and NGO schools in Delhi NCR through an innovative project called Mobile Science Lab (MSL).

MSL is committed to fostering a lifelong interest in the sciences and to prepare under privileged children for rewarding careers in science and technology-related fields. The initiative aims at introducing experimentation, demonstrations, and other engaging educational experiences for students. The initiative involves operating 2 mobile Lab Vans. Each Mobile Lab Van has over 150 experiments and is manned by a driver and two teachers/instructors. The project is being implemented in Govt. and NGO schools in conjunction with the education departments of Noida and Gurgaon, local NGO’s and resource persons since October, 2010.

The initiative aims to bring a shift in five vital behaviors – ‘Yes to Why’, ‘Looking to Observing’, ‘Passiveness to Exploring’, ‘Text-book to Hands-on’, and ‘Fear to Confidence’ – through highly innovative and effective outreach channels of workshops and school science fairs.

On a normal day the Mobile Lab Team visits various schools assigned by education department and demonstrate models/concepts. The Mobile Labs are also involved in conducting Science fairs, teacher training and community awareness programs.

The project has impacted over 82,000 students of grades 6th to 11th, 3000 teachers in 200 Government schools across Noida, Gurgaon and Mewat. Plans are afoot to augment the ambit of operations to other adjoining areas.

Project Title:-  United Way Evening Clinic
Key Focus:-  Health

Background

UWD Hundreds and thousands of people in the lowest strata of society delay seeking consultation from doctors until their condition becomes severe and even then the chances are high that they will consult a quack or non-qualified medical practitioner. There are many reasons why people delay seeking care, but one reason is that work is often prioritized over health. The health care services offered by the Government or NGOs are primarily available only during daytime working hours making it extremely difficult for daily wage earners to avail of them at the expense of one day’s wage. With cities increasingly becoming home to a large number of daily wage earning migrant people there is a significant need to provide quality health services at hours which do not clash with their working hours.

The Project

UWD To address this need, United Way of Delhi (UWD) is piloting United Way Evening Clinics from 4-8 pm to increase access of the migrant population of daily wagers residing in slums to preventive and curative health care during hours that do not clash with their working hours. The array of services available in these clinics is consistent with general Out Patient Department care with additional facility of Referral links for emergency cases to go to hospitals, for ambulance services and for diagnostic services. Need based counseling services are provided to the patients. The patients are charged a nominal fee for the services and basic medicines are provided free to patients.

As part of outreach activities, the population of the catchment area is being educated on preventive measures and home based management of ailments like malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, HIV/AIDS, anemia and the like. Health education also addresses myths and beliefs of patients about various diseases. The clinic staff is trained to answer health queries and communicate efficiently and effectively with the patients.

As there is a high incidence of men attending the evening clinics along with their kith and kin, there is an emphasis on educating ‘Fathers’ and ‘Husbands’ on the issues of taking care of children, harmful effects of alcoholism and substance abuse, and gender sensitivity. Increasing the awareness of fathers and husbands about preventive care enhances the possibility of providing immunization among pregnant women and children under age five that might otherwise would have been missed. Gender factor thus is an imperative part of this pilot clinic in redressing male participation and empowering women for improved health and nutrition.
